DEFINITION: Democracy is a form of government in which all people are allowed to participate equally. The word Democracy means 'people power'- the right of people to make decisions on how they are ruled. In the modern democracies citizens elect representatives to rule on their behalf, and these representatives remain answerable to electors through all the time they are elected in.
History/Origin: Democracy was found in Greece in the ancient city of Athens. Today's Democracies are based on a system started in Athens in the 5th century BC. Democracy comes from the Greek words Demos meaning 'the people' and kratos meaning 'power'. No two countries have the same form of democracy for example... Australia and America. Where America has different laws then Australia. For example in some places in America people have the right to carry guns.
PROS&CONS:
PROS-
Everyone can express their opinions.
The rulers are supported by a majority, everyone who votes is not alone, they have a privilege of being backed up in a vote.
It provides people with the opportunity to participate in voting in rules that effect their lives.
CONS-
No one would take responsibility of whats going on. People would start to feel uncomfortable because they might think that the vote is not being taken into interest. For example when people protest they might feel offended that the people protesting are saying no to their idea.
Again everyone can express their opinion but they can do that by not knowing fully is going on. Their opinions can be influinced by emotion rather than fact.
There is possibility of corruption by large groups pushing their own business interest rather than what is good for the people.
